HM Naval Base Clyde
Her Majesty’s Naval Base Clyde – commonly known throughout the Navy as Faslane – is the Royal Navy’s main presence in Scotland. It is home to the core of the Submarine Service, including the nation’s nuclear deterrent, and the new generation of hunter-killer submarines. More than 6,500 civilians and Service personnel are employed on the site. HMNB Clyde provides a base port to the ships and submarines of the Faslane Flotilla (FASFLOT) and supports dozens of other visiting vessels each year.
The Naval Base comprises the Naval Base at Faslane itself, the Royal Naval Armaments Depot (RNAD) at nearby Coulport, MOD Caledonia at Rosyth, as well as Navy Buildings at Greenock and a number of military ranges.
RNAD Coulport, eight miles from Faslane, is responsible for the storage, processing, maintenance and issue of the Trident Weapon System and the ammunitioning of all submarine embarked weapons.
MOD Caledonia, at Dunfermline on the east coast of Scotland, provides accommodation and support for naval personnel standing by the ships and submarines in refit at the nearby Rosyth dockyard. The site is home to the Naval Regional Commander Scotland and Northern Ireland (NRCSNI), Royal Naval Reserve Unit HMS Scotia and the Royal Marine Band Scotland.
The Faslane Flotilla comprises: four nuclear powered Vanguard Class SSBN submarines (HMS Vanguard, HMS Victorious, HMS Vigilant and HMS Vengeance), two nuclear powered, conventionally armed submarines (HMS Sceptre and HMS Astute), eight Sandown Class Single Role Mine Hunters (SRMH), the first of the Royal Navy's Astute Class attack submarines - HMS Astute (which is the biggest and most powerful attack submarine ever built for the Royal Navy) plus three nuclear powered Trafalgar Class SSN attack submarines (to be based at HM Naval Base Clyde following the Maritime Change Programme Announcement.)
At HM Naval Base Clyde there is an excellent Sportsdrome, Adventurous Training, Ski & Snowboarding Centre, & Sailing Club. There is a Spar shop, a Barber, and Post Office. Spouses are welcome to use the Chaplaincy and Sports facilities once they have a Base Pass (the HIVE Officer can advise on how to get a Pass).
